Overview
Home General Contracting wanted to establish an online presence to grow their business.
Home General Contracting, a local family-run renovation company, initially built their business through word-of-mouth referrals. However, they recognized the potential to attract more customers by establishing an online presence, particularly through a website. This platform would allow potential customers to view their past projects and easily get in touch with them. My task was to design and publish the actual website and create additional branding materials.
Project Constraints
I used Squarespace, the existing site builder, so that the manager could maintain the site after the project was complete.
I mapped out how to structure the website’s content and created low-fidelity prototypes.

Then, I created a mini style guide and additional brand materials.
Branding
I designed the style guide around the manager's established colour palette and logo, and incorporated a modern and professional typography set tailored for the website.
In addition to the style guide, the manager asked for new business cards, which I also designed.
Finally, I built the website according to the earlier prototypes.
Final Website

Designing for users AND clients.
I learned the importance of prioritizing both user needs and client requirements. Although my initial wireframe sketches did not include multiple contact forms, the client specifically asked for them, and I included several more contact forms throughout the website. Designing with a user-centric approach is crucial, yet the final product must also align with the client’s business objectives. It's a delicate balance that ensures a successful outcome.
Iteration is key.
The design process is truly never finished. While the website is live, my plan is to continually integrate various UX Design concepts, such as Miller’s Law, into the list of services. This approach ensures that the design remains dynamic and aligned with evolving user expectations, providing a seamless experience for clients and their customers.
Key takeaways from my first client project.
